Teaching Model & Certification

Collaborative Learning Model

Silicon Valley Academy proudly implements Guided Language Acquisition Design, or GLAD, as our official teaching model. GLAD is a research-based model in which all SVA teachers are trained to effectively teach academic subjects and manage student behavior. GLAD strategies help students understand the subject matter at hand, which in turn promotes academic achievement. GLAD is rooted in collaboration, where students learn from both teachers and peers. Research shows that peer learning deepens understanding. SVA teachers guide students from support to independence: first explaining concepts (often with visuals), then facilitating group work, and finally encouraging independent application. In one method, each student becomes an “expert” in a specific topic and teaches their peers. Students also engage in project-based learning, working together to investigate real-world questions. The GLAD approach builds critical thinking, communication, and conflict-resolution skills while supporting all learners—advanced students reinforce their knowledge by helping others, and those needing support learn in a safe, encouraging environment.

Research-based Techniques

The GLAD teaching model is grounded in brain research and best practices to make learning accessible for all students. At SVA, language arts are integrated with science and social studies for deeper understanding. GLAD strategies—using charts, visuals, songs, poems, and routines—support diverse learners and help information stick. Students develop critical thinking by reflecting on how they learn, not just on finding answers.

SVA fosters a language-rich, supportive classroom that builds lifelong learners. Student growth is continuously monitored through formal and informal assessments, including observations, projects, and tests. Science and social studies unit tests exceed state standards, while the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) tracks reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension throughout the year. Results appear on quarterly report cards and guide instruction and support. Daily math homework, corrections, and weekly tests ensure steady progress and success.

Teacher Certification & Professional Development

At SVA, all teachers are GLAD-certified and use research-based methods proven to boost student achievement. Teachers complete GLAD training before the school year begins and receive ongoing professional development. Each teacher is paired with a senior mentor to support effective implementation. Core GLAD strategies include reinforcing vocabulary through repetition and gestures, using visuals to strengthen understanding, and encouraging evidence-based thinking. SVA’s Principal and Vice Principal—both certified GLAD trainers—provide continuous coaching, have trained educators nationwide, and conduct biannual classroom evaluations to ensure consistent, high-quality instruction.
